Starting this month (October) I’ll be picking a product that I’ve used on a regular basis that I think has improved my life in one way, shape, or form.
This month that honor goes to ClimbOn’s lotion bar.
There are literally hundreds of products like this on the market. They are aimed towards climbers, CrossFitters, weight lifters, and trades-people alike. Basically anyone who beats up their hands on a regular basis.
So what is it about this particular product that I enjoy? First is the packaging. The lotion comes packaged in a simple aluminum can that is reusable!
Many other companies use a plastic lip balm style applicator. I’ve been looking to reduce my reliance on plastics as much as I can and this stuff fits the bill.
The second is the actual consistency of the lotion itself. It rubs off nicely onto the skin without being too thick or overly sticky. I’ve used other products that gunk up your hand and end up attracting more icky stuff into rips and tears than keeping the bad stuff out.
Third is the ingredient list. Unfortunately for my vegan friends this is a product that uses bees wax, so pass on this item if that is a concern. I would also double down and say that if you have Celiac disease, you may also need to pass due to the wheat germ oil (I’ve read some folks can have a reaction).
Everything else is recognizable and all items I feel comfortable putting on my skin. The ingredients are as follows: Cera alba (beeswax), Prunus armeniaca (apricot) kernel oil, Vitis vinifera (grape) seed oil, Triticum vulgare (wheat) germ oil, Citrus limon (lemon) peel oil, Citrus aurantium L (neroli) flower oil, Lavendula angustifolia (lavender) flower oil. NON GMO tocopherol (vit E).
The fourth thing I like is the smell. It’s not overpowering or overly scented with essential oils. I have another brand of hand lotion like this that works well, but the scent can be too much at times. It also tends to make my dog go nuts for some reason with wanting to lick my hands, so I’ve opted to stick to ClimbOn!
The final thing that I like is the overall value. I think I paid around $10-12 for a 1oz. tin at my local climbing gym (Boulders Climbing Gym -what up?!), which probably sounds like a lot, but a little goes a long way. I bet it will take me at least a year to go through the whole tin. That’s assuming I don’t keep tearing my hands to shreds between CrossFit and bouldering sessions.
After poking around on ClimbOn’s parent company site, Skinourishment.com (nice URL grab) I see that the company does actually make a simliar product marketing to CrossFit/functional fitness athletes called crossFIXE (quite clever name) that intrigues me. It comes in a recycled cardboard tube, has some slightly different ingredients, and costs a little more. I’d be curious to give it a try though (hint hint folks- free marketing) to see how it compares.
Unfortunately because I’m just coming back to blogging, I don’t have any sort of hookup code or anything. I usually would direct people to buy these items from a local retailer anyway, but if you don’t have a gym or pharmacy type store that stocks this product you can obviously purchase it direct from the source online at the links above.
You can also thank me for not posting any photos on here of my beaten up hands. If you want to see that you can feel free to give me a follow on Instagram either at @spokehaven for my cycling related content or @twowheelfitness for my general fitness related content including nutrition, workouts, and climbing.
